  • Scientific Name: Strelitzia nicolai
  • Common Names: Giant White Bird of Paradise, Wild Banana
  • Native Region: Native to South Africa, particularly the eastern coastal regions of KwaZulu-Natal and Mozambique.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to bright, indirect light. It thrives in strong light and can tolerate several hours of direct sun daily, especially outdoors. Indoors, place it in the brightest possible location to prevent leaf stretching and promote healthy growth.

Watering Needs: Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry. Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth, but avoid soggy conditions. Reduce watering in winter. This plant prefers deep, thorough watering with time to dry out slightly between soakings.

Soil Preference: Use a well-draining, rich potting mix. A blend of potting soil, perlite, and bark or coco coir allows for both moisture retention and drainage. Ensure the container has proper drainage holes.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer or slow-release pellets. Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11. Can be grown outdoors in tropical or subtropical climates and should be brought indoors or protected when temperatures drop below 40°F (4°C).

Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, or drowsiness. Keep out of reach of pets.

Additional Care Tips: Strelitzia nicolai is a fast-growing tropical plant that can reach tree-like proportions over time. Its large, banana-like leaves naturally split with age and wind exposure—this is normal and not a sign of distress. It prefers high humidity and benefits from occasional misting or a humidifier indoors. Rotate regularly for even growth. Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound. Large plants may require staking for stability in containers.
