  • Scientific Name: Senecio haworthii
  • Common Names: Cocoon Plant, Woolly Senecio
  • Native Region: Native to South Africa, particularly the Cape Province.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun and thrives in bright, direct sunlight. It can tolerate partial sun but may become leggy or lose its silvery coating if not given enough light.

Watering Needs: Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry. This plant is highly drought-tolerant and should never be kept in consistently moist soil. Reduce watering frequency in the cooler months.

Soil Preference: Use a sharply draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding extra pumice or coarse sand can improve drainage and reduce the risk of root rot.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month or every 6 weeks. Do not fertilize during the fall and winter.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 10–11. It does not tolerate frost and should be overwintered indoors in cooler climates.

Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion may cause vomiting, drooling, or gastrointestinal distress. Keep out of reach of pets.

Additional Care Tips: The cocoon plant’s fine white hairs help protect it from sun and drought, so avoid touching or handling it too much, as this can rub off the protective coating. It stays compact and is suitable for containers or rock gardens. Propagate easily from stem cuttings after allowing the cut end to callous over.
