Light: Portulacaria afra thrives in bright, indirect light. It can also tolerate direct sunlight, making it suitable for south-facing windows. If grown outdoors, it should be placed in a location that receives plenty of light but with some afternoon shade.
Watering: Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has good drainage. Water less frequently during the winter months when the plant is not actively growing.
Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. You can also make your own mix by combining regular potting soil with perlite or sand to improve drainage.
Humidity: This plant prefers low humidity and can adapt to average indoor humidity levels. It does not require additional humidity.
Temperature: Keep the temperature between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Portulacaria afra is sensitive to frost and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Avoid placing it in drafty areas or near heating vents.
Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted, balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
Pruning: Prune regularly to maintain the plant’s shape and promote bushier growth. Remove any leggy or overgrown stems using clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears. Pruning also helps to manage the plant's size and encourages a fuller appearance.
