  • Scientific Name: Portulacaria afra 'Medio-picta'
  • Common Names: Midstripe Rainbow Bush, Elephant Bush
  • Native Region: South Africa.

Light Requirements: Portulacaria afra 'Medio-picta' thrives in bright, direct light. It performs best with several hours of direct sun each day, which helps maintain its cream-and-green variegation and compact growth. In lower light, stems may become leggy and variegation less pronounced.

Watering Needs: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away completely. This succulent is highly drought tolerant and is very sensitive to overwatering. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months when growth slows.

Soil Preference: Use a very well-draining succulent or cactus mix. A mineral-rich blend with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand provides excellent drainage and helps prevent root rot.

How to Fertilize: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus or balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks. Do not fertilize during fall and winter.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11. It should be protected from prolonged freezing temperatures and is commonly grown indoors in colder climates.

Pet Safety: Considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Additional Care Tips: Portulacaria afra 'Medio-picta' is a slow-growing, variegated succulent with creamy white leaf centers and pink-tinged stems. It tolerates pruning well, making it an excellent candidate for bonsai or shaping. Provide plenty of light and avoid excessive watering to maintain healthy, compact growth.
