  • Scientific Name: Phlebodium pseudoaureum
  • Common Names: Blue Rabbit’s Foot Fern, Blue Star Fern
  • Native Region: Native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, including Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.

Light Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light. It thrives in dappled sunlight or near a north- or east-facing window. Avoid direct sunlight, which can bleach or burn its distinctive blue-green fronds.

Watering Needs: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. This fern is sensitive to both drought and overwatering, so aim for evenly moist conditions and avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

Soil Preference: Use a rich, well-draining mix that retains moisture without becoming compacted. A combination of peat moss, perlite, and composted bark works well. Good aeration is essential for healthy rhizome development.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce or suspend feeding during fall and winter when growth slows.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 8–11. Indoors, maintain temperatures above 55°F and protect from drafts or sudden temperature changes.

Pet Safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs. Safe to grow in homes with pets.

Additional Care Tips: Phlebodium pseudoaureum is an epiphytic fern native to subtropical forests and is known for its wavy, bluish fronds and furry rhizomes that creep along the soil surface. It appreciates high humidity (above 50%), making it ideal for bathrooms or kitchens. If humidity is low, supplement with a pebble tray or humidifier. Repot every 2–3 years in early spring if the plant becomes rootbound or the rhizomes outgrow the container. Gently trim back old or damaged fronds to encourage fresh growth.
