  • Scientific Name: Pellionia daveauana
  • Common Names: Rainbow Vine, Watermelon Vine, Trailing Watermelon Begonia
  • Native Region: Native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including China, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

Light Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant silver, green, and purple foliage. It can tolerate moderate light conditions but may become less colorful and grow more slowly in lower light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

Watering Needs: Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but avoid allowing it to become waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry to the touch, then allow excess water to drain away. This plant is sensitive to drying out completely and may wilt quickly if underwatered. Reduce watering slightly during the winter months when growth slows.

Soil Preference: Use a rich, well-draining potting mix that retains moisture while allowing good airflow around the roots. A blend of quality potting soil with peat moss or coco coir, perlite, and compost works well to provide nutrients and prevent the soil from becoming compacted.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer. Apply fertilizer at half-strength every 4-6 weeks. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when growth slows.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for outdoor cultivation in zones 10-12. In cooler climates, it is typically grown as a houseplant or in containers that can be moved indoors during colder months. Protect from temperatures below 50°F, as it prefers warm, humid conditions.

Pet Safety: Considered non-toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. However, consuming large amounts of any plant material may cause mild digestive upset. Keep it out of reach of pets and children.

Additional Care Tips: Trim regularly to encourage fuller, bushier growth and remove any damaged or yellowing leaves. Provide moderate to high humidity, especially in dry indoor environments, as low humidity can cause browning leaf edges. Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound, using a container with drainage holes. Clean leaves gently to remove dust and maintain the plant's appearance.
