  • Scientific Name: Muehlenbeckia complexa
  • Common Names: Angel Vine, Wire Vine, Maidenhair Vine
  • Native Region: Native to New Zealand.

Light Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial sun. It can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sun but should be protected from harsh midday rays, which can dry out or scorch the delicate foliage. In low light, it may become leggy and sparse.

Watering Needs: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. Do not allow it to dry out completely for extended periods, especially in warm environments. Water less frequently in winter.

Soil Preference: Use a well-draining potting mix with moderate moisture retention. A mix of peat moss, compost, and perlite works well. Make sure the container has adequate drainage.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during spring through early fall with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Do not fertilize in winter unless the plant shows active growth.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 8–10. Outdoors, it can be grown as a groundcover or climbing vine in mild climates. In cooler regions, it is typically grown as a container plant and overwintered indoors.

Pet Safety: Mildly toxic to pets. Ingestion may cause mild gastrointestinal upset. Keep out of reach of curious cats and dogs.

Additional Care Tips: Muehlenbeckia complexa is a fast-growing, twining vine with fine, wiry stems and small round leaves. It can be grown as a trailing houseplant, a topiary, or trained up a small trellis. Prune regularly to control shape and encourage dense growth. Propagate easily by softwood cuttings. This plant prefers moderate to high humidity—mist occasionally or place near a humidifier if indoor air is dry.
