  • Scientific Name: Ledebouria socialis
  • Common Names: Silver Squill, Leopard Lily
  • Native Region: Native to South Africa, particularly in the Eastern Cape Province.

Light Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light to several hours of gentle direct sun. It can tolerate lower light but will grow more slowly and may lose some leaf patterning.

Watering Needs: Water when the soil is fully dry. This bulb-forming plant is drought-tolerant and sensitive to overwatering. Reduce watering significantly in winter when growth slows.

Soil Preference: Use a very well-draining potting mix. A cactus or succulent blend with added pumice or perlite helps prevent moisture buildup around the bulbs.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 40°F.

Pet Safety: Mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.

Additional Care Tips: Ledebouria socialis has spotted leaves and exposed purple bulbs that should remain slightly above the soil line. It spreads by producing clusters of new bulbs—divide if overcrowded or to propagate. Provide good airflow and avoid soggy soil to prevent rot. Rotate occasionally for even light exposure.
