  • Scientific Name: Fittonia albivenis
  • Common Names: Nerve Plant, Mosaic Plant
  • Native Region: Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, specifically Peru and Colombia.

Light Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions but will thrive best in bright, filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering Needs: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Fittonia are sensitive to drying out and will quickly wilt if the soil becomes too dry. However, it usually recovers quickly with thorough watering.

Soil Preference: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. A mixture of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite works well to provide the necessary moisture retention and drainage.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer. Apply fertilizer at half-strength every 4-6 weeks. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows.

Hardiness Zone: Typically grown indoors as it is not frost-tolerant. It prefers temperatures between 60-75°F (16-24°C).

Pet Safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for households with pets.

Additional Care Tips: Prune regularly to encourage a bushier growth habit and remove any yellow or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance. Repot every 1-2 years in the spring, using a pot one size larger to give the roots room to grow.
