  • Scientific Name: Euphorbia leucodendron
  • Common Names: Cat Tails Euphorbia, Pencil Euphorbia, Milk Bush
  • Native Region: Native to Madagascar, where it grows in warm, dry environments.

Light Requirements: Prefers bright light to full sun. Provide several hours of direct sunlight each day to encourage strong, upright growth and maintain its attractive green stems. When transitioning the plant from lower light to direct sunlight, gradually increase exposure to prevent scorching. In extremely hot climates, provide some afternoon shade during intense summer heat.

Watering Needs: Water thoroughly when the soil has dried out completely. Allow excess water to drain fully and avoid watering again until the soil is completely dry. Reduce watering during winter or cooler periods when growth slows. Euphorbia leucodendron is drought-tolerant and is particularly susceptible to root rot when overwatered.

Soil Preference: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding pumice, perlite, or coarse sand helps improve drainage and prevents excess moisture around the roots. Choose a pot with drainage holes, and avoid heavy soils that retain water for extended periods.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize every 6–8 weeks during the growing season (spring through summer) with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. Use a balanced, low-strength fertilizer to support healthy stem growth without encouraging excessive, weak growth. Reduce or skip feeding during winter.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 10–11. It prefers warm conditions and should be protected from frost and prolonged cold temperatures. In cooler climates, grow it in a container so it can be moved indoors during cold weather.

Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs. Like other Euphorbia species, it produces a milky latex sap that can cause skin irritation and serious eye irritation. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Wear gloves when pruning or handling damaged stems, avoid contact with the sap, and keep the plant out of reach of children and pets.

Additional Care Tips: Euphorbia leucodendron is a branching succulent shrub with upright, cylindrical green stems that create an architectural, almost cactus-like appearance. Despite its resemblance to a cactus, it is a true Euphorbia and produces irritating milky sap when cut or damaged. Provide plenty of sunlight and avoid excessive watering to maintain sturdy growth. Prune carefully if the plant becomes too large or develops unwanted branches, taking precautions to prevent sap from contacting your skin or eyes. Allow cut surfaces to dry before exposing them to moisture. It can be propagated from stem cuttings, but the cut ends should be allowed to callus before planting in dry, well-draining soil.
