  • Scientific Name: Echeveria setosa var. minor
  • Common Names: Mexican Firecracker, Mexican Firecracker Echeveria, Woolly Rose
  • Native Region: Mexico, particularly the states of Puebla and Oaxaca, where it grows in rocky habitats and semi-arid environments.

Light Requirements: Prefers partial to full sun. Provide several hours of direct sunlight each day to encourage compact rosette growth and enhance the reddish tips of its leaves. Morning sunlight and gentle afternoon sun help maintain healthy growth and vibrant coloration. In extremely hot climates, provide some afternoon shade to prevent scorching and excessive stress.

Watering Needs: Water thoroughly when the soil has dried out completely. Allow excess water to drain fully and avoid watering again until the soil is completely dry. Water at the soil level rather than directly over the fuzzy leaves, as moisture trapped among the hairs can encourage rot and fungal problems. Reduce watering during winter or cooler periods when growth slows.

Soil Preference: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding pumice, perlite, or coarse sand helps improve drainage and prevents excess moisture around the roots. Choose a pot with drainage holes to ensure water does not accumulate around the roots.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize every 6–8 weeks during the growing season (spring through summer) with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. Use a low-strength formula to support healthy growth without encouraging excessive stretching. Reduce or skip feeding during winter when growth slows.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11. It prefers warm, dry conditions and should be protected from frost and prolonged freezing temperatures. In cooler climates, grow it in a container so it can be moved indoors or to a sheltered location when temperatures drop.

Pet Safety: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, ingestion of plant material may cause mild gastrointestinal upset in some pets. Keep the plant out of reach of animals that tend to chew on foliage.

Additional Care Tips: Echeveria setosa var. minor, commonly known as Mexican Firecracker, is a compact succulent that forms attractive rosettes of fleshy green leaves covered in fine, white hairs. The leaf tips can develop reddish coloration when the plant receives plenty of sunlight. Mature plants may produce tall flower stalks bearing bright red flowers with yellow tips, typically in spring or summer. Avoid touching the fuzzy leaves excessively, as handling can damage their delicate surface and leave marks. Provide good airflow and keep the rosette relatively dry to reduce the risk of rot. Remove dried lower leaves as needed, and propagate the plant from offsets or healthy stem cuttings.
