  • Scientific Name: Dracaena reflexa 'Variegata'
  • Common Names: Song of India, Variegated Dracaena
  • Native Region: Parent species native to Madagascar, Mauritius, and other islands in the Indian Ocean.

Light Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but the variegation becomes more pronounced with higher light levels. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaf margins.

Watering Needs: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil moderately moist but never soggy. Dracaenas are sensitive to fluoride and salts in tap water, which may cause leaf tip browning—use filtered or distilled water when possible.

Soil Preference: Use a well-draining potting mix with good aeration. A peat-based houseplant mix amended with perlite or coarse sand works well.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize during the growing season (spring through early fall) with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4–6 weeks. Do not fertilize in winter.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 10–12. Indoors, it prefers temperatures between 65–80°F and should be protected from drafts or cold air.

Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion may cause vomiting, drooling, or lack of coordination. Keep out of reach of pets.

Additional Care Tips: Dracaena reflexa 'Variegata' is known for its creamy-edged, lance-shaped leaves and elegant, upright growth. Rotate the plant regularly for even development. Prune leggy stems to encourage bushier growth. Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound, and wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust and support photosynthesis. Propagate by stem cuttings rooted in water or moist soil.
