  • Scientific Name: Dionaea muscipula
  • Common Names: Venus Flytrap
  • Native Region: Native to subtropical wetlands in North and South Carolina, USA.

Light Requirements: Requires full sun for optimal growth, ideally 12 hours of bright, direct light daily. If grown indoors, place it near a south-facing window.

Watering Needs: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Use distilled water, rainwater, or reverse osmosis water, as tap water can harm the plant. Allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings during winter dormancy.

Soil Preference: Prefers a well-draining, acidic mix, typically composed of sphagnum moss, peat moss, and perlite. Avoid using standard potting soil, as it can retain too much moisture and minerals.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced fertilizer or a specific carnivorous plant fertilizer. Feeding is usually unnecessary if the plant catches its own prey.

Hardiness Zone: Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 7-10. Typically grown as a houseplant in colder regions, where it requires protection from frost.

Pet Safety: Non-toxic to pets, but it’s best to prevent pets from chewing on the leaves.

Additional Care Tips: Venus Flytraps require a period of dormancy in winter. Reduce watering and keep the plant in a cooler environment (around 40°F to 50°F / 4°C to 10°C) during this time. If kept indoors, you may need to supplement its diet with insects, as it may not catch enough prey on its own, be careful not to over feed.
