  • Scientific Name: Begonia amphioxus
  • Common Names: Pink Spotted Begonia, Butterfly Begonia
  • Native Region: Borneo, particularly Sabah in Malaysia

Light Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch or fade the delicate spotted foliage. Gentle morning or filtered light is ideal.

Watering Needs: Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth. Water when the top ½–1 inch of soil feels dry. Avoid prolonged dryness or soggy conditions, and ensure excess water can drain freely.

Soil Preference: Use a rich, well-draining mix with good aeration. A combination of potting soil with added perlite or coarse sand works well.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer. Reduce or withhold feeding during fall and winter.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 10–11. Indoors, maintain warm temperatures and stable conditions.

Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.

Additional Care Tips: Begonia amphioxus features narrow, elongated leaves with red spots and reddish margins, thriving in moderate to high humidity (50%+). It does well in terrariums or grouped with other humidity-loving plants. Avoid sudden changes in environment, drafts, or strong air currents, as these can lead to leaf drop. Remove older or yellowing leaves to encourage fresh growth. Propagate from stem cuttings when the plant is well established.
