  • Scientific Name: Aspidistra elatior
  • Common Names: Cast Iron Plant, Bar-Room Plant
  • Native Region: Southern Japan and Taiwan

Light Requirements: Tolerates low to moderate indirect light. It thrives in shade or filtered light and is ideal for dim indoor corners. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering Needs: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. It prefers evenly moist soil but is very forgiving of occasional neglect. Avoid soggy conditions to prevent root rot.

Soil Preference: Use a well-draining potting mix with good aeration. A standard indoor mix with added perlite or bark is suitable.

How to Fertilize: Fertilize every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.

Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 7–11. Indoors, maintain temperatures between 60–85°F. Tolerates temperature fluctuations well.

Pet Safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Additional Care Tips: Aspidistra elatior is extremely durable and slow-growing. It's resistant to pests, drought, and low humidity, making it ideal for low-maintenance environments. Clean leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust. Repotting is rarely necessary—only when rootbound. Avoid overhandling, as leaves bruise easily.
